The Operational Adaptation Project (PAO) of Minera Los Pelambres (Antofagasta Minerals) aims to align the current operations with the realities of the Choapa Valley without increasing production or extending the company's lifespan.

Approved in October 2023, PAO includes expanding desalination capacity to ensure over 90% of water used comes from the sea or recirculation. It also involves constructing a new concentrate transport system. Upon its operation start in 2027, the project will stop using water from the Choapa River for operations.

The mountainous environment of the region and the particularities of the project - such as the installation within 3 tunnels of up to 3km long and narrow RoW restrictions - make the construction strategy very challenging.

SCOPE OF WORK

Water Transport System Expansion:
Increase water transport system capacity to 830 l/s between Tranque El Mauro and Chacay plant.
Construction of a pumping station for the 28” Water Pipeline, extending 61 km.

New Slurry Pipeline Installation:
Installation of an 8” Slurry Pipeline, extending 125 km, between Chacay plant and Punta Chungo.

Additional Tasks:
Relocation of two pipelines.
Construction of a 3.5 km tailings canal in the Tranque el Mauro area.

Note: Pipe installation on narrow platforms with existing operational pipelines, including three tunnels and three existing bridges.
